Eddy current testing is among the many non-destructive testing methods that make use of electromagnetism for conducting these tests. There are other NDT methods as well that use electromagnetism principle, including Flux leakage, and remote field testing among others. And if you want to be an NDT technician or in other words, perform NDT at a professional level at industrial facilities, you will have to undergo NDT training from a reputed institute.
Depending on the method you do your specialization in, you will learn about eddy current testing, magnetic particle inspection, liquid penetrant testing, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, or others. If you are learning about eddy current testing, you will come to know that these currents are formed through electromagnetic induction. On applying alternating current to copper wire or any other conductor, there will be a creation of a magnetic field that will surround the conductor. This magnetic field is directly proportional to the alternating current applied to the conductor.
Once you will learn about eddy current testing and add it to your NDT repertoire, you will be able to use it in the following applications:
- Measurement of material thickness
- Detection of cracks
- Measurement of coating thickness
- Detection of corrosion damage
- Measure of conductivity
